How We Review

Last updated: April 7, 2026

At Zale's Makeup, we take our reviews seriously. Every product that earns a spot on our site goes through a rigorous, multi-step process designed to give you the most accurate and helpful information possible. Here's exactly how we do it.

Our Step-by-Step Review Process

Every review we publish follows these four stages:

  • 1. Research. Before we even open a product, our team researches the brand, ingredient list, product claims, and existing customer feedback. We also look at how the product fits within its category and price point.
  • 2. Testing. We test every product hands-on for a minimum of two to four weeks. Our testers use products as part of their daily routines to assess performance under real conditions — not in a lab, but in everyday life.
  • 3. Writing. Our writers craft detailed, honest reviews that cover performance, ingredients, value, packaging, and overall experience. We include both pros and cons — no product is perfect, and we believe our readers deserve the full picture.
  • 4. Editing. Every review is fact-checked and edited for accuracy, clarity, and consistency. Our editors ensure claims are supported and the review meets our editorial standards.

Rating Criteria

We evaluate every product across five key dimensions:

  • Effectiveness. Does the product deliver on its promises? Does it produce visible, meaningful results?
  • Value. Is the product worth its price? We consider cost per use and how it compares to alternatives in the same category.
  • Ingredients. Are the ingredients well-formulated, safe, and appropriate for the product's intended use? We flag potential irritants and notable actives.
  • Packaging. Is the packaging functional, hygienic, and travel-friendly? We consider sustainability and ease of use.
  • User Experience. How does the product feel, smell, and look in use? We consider texture, application, absorption, and overall sensory experience.

How Long We Test Products

We believe meaningful results take time. Our minimum testing period is two to four weeks, but many products — especially skincare — are tested for longer:

  • Makeup products (foundation, lipstick, mascara): typically 2 to 3 weeks of daily use.
  • Skincare products (serums, moisturizers, treatments): typically 4 to 8 weeks to assess long-term effects.
  • Hair care products (shampoo, conditioner, treatments): typically 3 to 4 weeks across multiple wash cycles.
  • Fragrances: tested over multiple days and occasions to evaluate longevity, sillage, and versatility.

We Consider Every Skin Type, Hair Type, and Preference

Beauty is personal, and what works for one person may not work for another. That's why we strive to include diverse perspectives in every review:

  • Our testers represent a range of skin tones, skin types (oily, dry, combination, sensitive), and concerns (acne, aging, hyperpigmentation).
  • For hair care, we consider different hair textures, densities, and conditions.
  • We note which skin or hair types a product is best suited for in every review.
  • We highlight products at various price points so there are options for every budget.

How We Select Products to Review

We can't review everything, so we focus on products that matter most to our readers. Our selection process considers:

  • Reader interest. Products that our audience is searching for, asking about, or curious about get priority.
  • Market trends. New launches, viral products, and trending ingredients often warrant a review so readers can make informed decisions.
  • Category gaps. We identify areas where our readers need guidance and seek out the best products to review in those categories.
  • Quality signals. Products with interesting formulations, strong brand reputations, or notable customer buzz are considered for review.

We do not accept payment to review a product or guarantee positive coverage. Our product selections are made entirely by our editorial team.
